Facebook Timeline.

What is this Facebook Timeline?

It is just a way to make your life busier.
Not with productive work but with Facebook!

I got the Timeline 5 Days back.
Since then I am addicted to  it!
It is fun and for a Stalker like me, its cherry on top of the cake as I get to see all that people did Since they were Born (which  is so funny and lame!) But the fun part is, I get to see everything they did since they were on facebook!

It does get annoying to actually read your own status from 2008 and see how much you have grown as an individual!

While some people are loving it, I just read a friend's status that said, "Oh dear god please never turn my profile into the Timeline thing that my friends are loving at the moment."

From places you've been to and the pages you've liked, it gives a clear image to anyone who is visiting your profile!
The map I had was very sad! I checked into 4 places till date! That too 2 in Nepal and 2 in India. That was so sad!

With so many changes that facebook goes through once in a while, it gets difficult for people to adapt but its fun too! Change is always good for the breaking of the monotony!

But this Timeline can be troublesome when it comes to using it on the phone. The 3G internet connection I have also takes more than a minute to load! So maybe there should be a Facebook version for the same!

For the ones using it already, it should be fun!

Enjoy timeline! =]

Love?

I don’t really know what Love is but I think I have been in love a couple of times!

I grew up reading “Mills and Boons”. For those who don’t know what it is, Mills and Boons is the publisher which has books basically for teenage girls who always fascinate about their prince charming. This could easily relate to any teenage girl because I don’t mind confessing, I always wanted to fall in love with a handsome hunk who could just sweep me off my feet, who would watch me sleep, cook me food, someone I could spend the whole life with and have plenty of kids with-yes, I am very fond of kids- in a small house with a fireplace and a chimney, not to forget the barbeque on the porch and a small garden with pretty flowers. Yes, I needed to grow up! But if it is a girl reading this, she will know what exactly what I am talking about because at some point of time, she has had the same feeling as well!

My first heartbreak was over a stupid infatuation I had with a neighbor boy when I was a 7th grader.  It happened over Hi5! As I think of it now, it makes me laugh because I was so obsessed with him! Scribbling his name everywhere, thinking of him, and telling him that I loved him a billion times! Well this all didn’t last long because he found a cougar and broke my heart into a million pieces! It was then that I decided never to date again!
The thought didn’t last long and I had a number of LOVE affairs after that! This thing, Love and relationships, they don’t really make sense do they? My parents were married when my Mommy was a 9th grader and my Dad was 10 years elder to her. They didn’t know each other at all and they were pronounced Husband and Wife and made promises to spend the whole life together. Not to forget the “Saat Phera” Seven rounds of the holy fire during the ceremony this meant that they would not only be together for this life but seven lifes!  But they still managed to get survive and be happy! Amidst the gazillion small fights they have every day, they love each other! And no matter how big the fight was in the morning, they still have so much to talk about at the end of the day. I don’t know if they do actually forget about the fights in the morning or they just pretend to forget it! Same case is with my grandparents who have been married for 58 years. My granddad who is the cutest person on earth teases my grandma by telling her that now that almost all of his teeth are gone, she will probably run away with someone else.
Being a pure Sagittarian, I believe that my lover will be either an Aries man or a Leo man or just like me, a Sagittarian; the three fire signs! And by co-incidence, all of my lovers till date are either one of them! I don’t pick or choose but it just happens. Plus, I am not the kind of a girl who would like to be flattered and loved with a lot of attention. It might sound like an animal, but I like to Hunt! And when I find the perfect one who understands me well, who would show interest in reading the things I wrote- That is a MUST! Not just for me, but to anyone who writes I guess-, accept the fact that I am so very irritating at times that they might just want to throw me out of the window! Ha-ha!

Well, I don’t know what got me write this article! It dates back to December 1st week and I just found it today, half written this lazy Saturday afternoon! So, just ending it up here! They were probably random thoughts sprouting up like mushrooms!

Happy Weekend Folks! =]

Ray- Bans!

From Tom cruise to Malvika Subba to you, Ray Ban has always been a hit and now getting into the world of glasses!

If you have watched Tom Cruise in "Risky Business", you will remember two things: the first is the scene where he comes sliding into the living room dancing in his underwear, and the second how good he looked in those sunglasses. Cruise sported Ray-Ban sunglasses in this movie and they became as big a hit as the movie itself. The movie was made in 1983; however Ray-Ban had already been making popular sunglasses for 46 years but this movie catapulted Ray-Ban into ‘must-have fashion gear’. Tom Cruise again made Ray-Ban famous with the use of Aviators in the movie “Top-Gun”.

Ray-Ban is the product of meticulous, original styling that translates the best of the latest trends into an ever-contemporary look for millions of Ray-Ban sunglasses wearers around the world. From commoners to celebrities everyone swears by the brand. Trouble maker Lindsay Lohan, talent bundle Jake Gyllenhaal, Twilight superstar Kristen Stewart and even the fashionistas Mary-Kate Olsen have been caught in the lens of the paparazzi adorning their loyal eye-wear. Not forgetting our own Malvika Subba who goes by the brand.
Under the big umbrella of Ray-Ban brand, there are many other sunglasses that steal the show: Aviators, Wayfarers, Polarised, Highstreet, Active Lifestyle, Clubmaster, Under current and Outsiders Sunglasses. All models are identified by the Ray-Ban signature engraved on the arms and stamped on the lenses.

One of the most prominent ones is the Aviators. Clean design and sophisticated look make them an unmistakable ambassador of style that never goes out of date. The Ray-Ban Aviators fit well, provide excellent protection and great visibility. Initially created to satisfy the increasingly demanding requirements of US Air Force pilots, the Aviator style of Ray-Ban gradually earned its place as an essential fashion accessory for both sexes. Aviator Ray-Ban sunglasses live up to their name by offering maximum wearer protection while delivering the distinctive style that has become world-famous, thanks to the many Hollywood stars who have chosen to wear them.

My familiarization with Ray-Ban dates long. When I was a small girl, whenever my father came home, he would take off his helmet, carry me in his arms and swing me back and forth before shoving up his aviator glasses high on his head. Most of the memories from my past with my father have his aviator glasses on it.

As the best-selling brand worldwide, the fashionable Kathmanduites have been parading the same and fighting the cruel heat with uber-cool Ray-Ban sunglasses. Both male and female are seen sporting the glasses which give them a classy and to-die-for look. So what are you waiting for? Get Ray-bans, Today! =]

Man on a Mission~ Amrit Gurung

Amrit Gurung, the man who has travelled over 70 districts in Nepal, most of them on foot shares his travel diaries.

Traveling, it feels like a middle name to me. I love traveling and if you are looking for a reason for why I travel so much, I really don’t have any! The things I see, hear and understand while on a trip are awesome and nothing compares to that feeling.  I started by traveling a little since childhood. Being a Gurung, we have a tradition of traveling and walking all the way to see our relatives. But my real travels started from 1984 which was a small trek to Yangjakot that wasn’t planned. I may not remember the math formulae I studied during my school days but I remember every face clearly and the tiniest of details by heart till date. And after that short trek, there was no stopping my travel diaries.

I asked inquisitively, “What are the places you have not been to then? Visiting 70 districts is something wonderful!”  He answered with a smile, “Why not ask me where I have visited first?” Talking about my favorite places, Nepal is so beautiful that one life is not enough if you want to see all of it. You will need another life if you really want to travel through the whole of Nepal. It’s a beautiful country and the people are beautiful with diverse features and the various Nepali languages spoken all over the country amused me. As a child, I always had an interest in geography but studying about Nepal in text books and seeing it in real life does make a difference.

Talking about my trips, some made me ecstatic and made me jump up a feet high while some things drove me close to tears. I will tell you about trips to the  Himalayas because they have been much loved and walking between them make you feel like a yeti!   While walking to Humla once, we came across a place called Hilsa which is right next to the Humla Karnali River which acts as a border to Tibet. The police check post there is situated in a local hotel while there has never been a health post here.  Across the border is a small village in Tibet, Taklakot. People cross the river using an ill maintained bridge that could break down any time and as soon as you cross the bridge, you will see a black-topped road with trucks, jeeps, and busses lined up and Chinese soldiers dressed in smart uniforms providing high security at the checkpoint. Isn’t this the same world we are all living in? Why are we so under developed? We are both human beings, we eat the same food; we have the same blood running down our veins.  The only difference we have here is political leaders and the Government. This is the situation of the country- The geographical features are beautifuland the political/social issues are devastating. We claim to have the second highest resources in water. We do, but has that been utilized properly? While travelling I was shocked to see water everywhere, but people are dying of thirst. Why is that happening? Do we call it lack of system and technology or just lazy manpower?

Just to change the topic, I popped up with a random question, “So what are your favorite places?” He responds, “If I start telling you about my favorite places, Living Magazine will run out of spaces and you will have to print a magazine exclusively for my travel tales!”  Talking about beautiful places in Nepal, it is spread all over. If you want to go on foot, the Himalayas would be the best and if by car, riding through the Terai would be breathtaking.

While travelling, I came across a village that promoted Polyandry marriage. Larke, which is a neighbouring district to Kathmandu, has such practices while people are shouting out slogans for Land Reforms and Anthropology in Kathmandu.  From my travel experiences, there are times when you feel like asking yourself, “Am I in Nepal?” Because it is so beautiful and every picture you take could be published in the National Geographic Magazine.  If you take the same trail, you will reach Annapurna Sanctuary which is also known as the world’s best trekking trials. And this has been my personal favourite for the tasty pizzas, steaks and internet connection available there unlike other places. I would love to have travelled alone but after Kanak Dixit’s accident, my colleagues don’t allow me to do so and I travel with porters and friends.

The Forbidden Valley in Mustang is like a desert, a Tibetean plateau where you have to hunt for people. The only visible people there are old people grazing their cattle. From the outside, the place looks like nothing but once you are inside a person’s house, you will see that every house has a Gumba of its own. And what you look for, there are high chances that you will get it only if you have cash. During my stay there, I even wrote a song called, “Yesto Thauma” where I sing about the life in this trans-Himalayan region which is very harsh. I wrote it out of respect for the hardship and tolerance of people of Mustang living closely with nature. One of my favourite places in Nepal is the place which has been featured in the movie Caravan as well, Phoksundo Taal which is a dead lake. It is so beautiful that I can assure you  that anyone who visits that place will be mesmerized by its beauty. Personally, I feel Caravan movie has portrayed the beauty of Nepal better than any promotional video ever made.

If I have to give advice to the Tourism Board of Nepal, -instead of making plans for NTY 2011, they should first try to see what problems prevail all over Nepal- from roads, to water problems to employment and what not? I cannot go to places as a tourist and be happy about places, take pictures and smile all the time; I am a Nepali and seeing my country in such a devastated state makes me want to cry but doing so too would not solve anything.  If you are making plans, try implementing them first rather than jumping to another new plan.

From Kitchen to The Table!

Sizzling meat, wine drenched fish bursting into flames, steam rising in clouds from freshly made sizzlers, melting cheese bubbling in pizzas freshly out of the oven. How do chefs work their culinary magic in the kitchen of one of the most popular restaurants in Nepal? Here’s an exclusive look into how ordinary ingredients are transformed into mouthwatering picture-perfect dishes in kitchens while we wait for our orders.

If you have ever watched one of the prolific and highly popular cookery competition shows on TV, you have probably envisioned scenes of the head chef shouting profanities, the clatter of the pans and the cutlery, the loud thuds of knives hitting the chopping boards and the sous chefs working in wild frenzy in front of blazing flames. Hell’s Kitchen, Top Chef, Iron Chef and all their British or American franchises are all reality competitive programs that show the drama and the atmosphere behind the swinging doors of the kitchen restricted to us. Who hasn’t trembled while watching Gordon Ramsay shout and swear at the lagging cook? Or maybe you think all the drama in the kitchen was just enacted to bring more ratings to the shows. Whatever the case, we at Living Magazine were curious to know what the atmosphere is like back in the kitchens of big restaurants. What goes on while we chat and laugh and wait impatiently for our food at our tables, often cursing for being served late?

“Raju! Have you stir fried the shrimps yet?” The head chef, Ajay Pudasaini, shouted from across the lavish bustling kitchen at Lobster’s Restaurant, Sherpa Mall to his sous chef. Raju who was sautĂ©ing potatoes in one pan and flipping an omelet in another looked up and said “They’re almost done, sir!” With a harassed expression, he turned his attention to the sizzling shrimps and gave them another stir with a huge wooden spatula.  The head chef took a glance over his shoulder at the clock ticking relentlessly behind him and gave more orders to the cooks making them run around the kitchen in hubbub. He says, “There is always some level of chaos in the kitchen because the customers want the best food in the shortest time and we want them to be gastronomically satisfied.”

We found ourselves  being jostled as the cooks and helpers dashed around to get the food ready as the orders popped up every 2-3 minutes. We had decided to get out of everyone’s way and had confined ourselves to one corner, watching their activities with bemused expressions. Pudasaini kindly invited us to watch as he cooked in the common area where Chicken Sizzler and Chopsuey were being prepared.  He was making Wild Mushroom Risotto with sea food that we had asked him to prepare. It was a rare opportunity for us to see what the chef was preparing step by step before your own eyes at a restaurant.

In a kitchen, a cook does not work alone; and when it comes to an efficient kitchen like that of Lobster’s, the team work is seamless. The head chef started off by assembling all the ingredients required for the risotto neatly on the table, barking out orders to the helpers, who scurried off promptly according to his bidding. As one of the cooks reached into the giant refrigerator that was easily three times the size of the ones we have at home to get some ingredients, we managed to get a peek into it. It was huge and had different compartments for everything, jam packed with fresh food, from exotic ones like lobsters, salmon, and shrimps to ordinary ones like butter, wine, vegetables, eggs, asparagus, coriander, cheese, meat and fruits.

With everything set on the table: the salmon, asparagus, coriander, olives, onion, oil, shrimps, rice, butter, tomatoes and mushroom, he finally started to cook on what we of the untrained eye assumed to be a big, flat rectangular frying pan with no raised edges. He placed a slab of freshly skinned salmon onto the smooth hot surface which was already laced with oil. It frizzled and sputtered as he added wine with great flare. The wine, he explained as he expertly handled the heat and wild flames, gives intense flavor to the salmon. As he swiftly took the salmon out of the pan, another cook was preparing chicken sizzler which ‘sizzled’ even more, making our mouths water. He then heated some butter in a pan and added cooked rice to it. His consequent movements were so swift we couldn’t get hold of the steps. His hands flew as he added salt, pepper and cream. While all this time, there was a sous chef standing next to him with a glass of red wine, which he poured directly into the pan making the rice burst into flames. Our stomachs were churning with hunger as the tempting smell of savory cooking lingered in our nostrils. Since lobsters has an open kitchen, we saw some girls chattering in the lounge room and wondered what we would be doing if we weren’t inside the kitchen watching the whole show. A cook fried mushrooms and shrimps for the garnish next to us. Once the risotto was done, he assembled it and the fried mushrooms at the center of a white plate in a pretty round tower shape, topped with the salmon. We watched hungrily and impatiently as he garnished the dish with sautĂ©ed asparagus, green pepper seeds, carrot slices and a shrimp on top. He then drizzled a light sauce of tomatoes and garlic around the risotto with a flourish, and our stomachs rejoiced; our food was done!

But with our interesting journey into the mysterious world of cooks, we now understand and we know how much effort it takes to prepare food that is not only appreciated by the customers but food that pleases every sensory organ. And about the swearing part, give your curiosities a break, they don’t swear as much as Gordon Ramsay!

Pouts~ :*

Wrote this for Healthy Life long time back!
Its winters now and you would probably need this! =]

Is your sexy pout your trademark which got ruined during winter? Are you too ashamed to smile in front of people because your dry chapped lips will be noticed?  But, no matter how full and shapely your lips may be, but if they are dry and parched it can easily spoil the look. Well, yes we know that lips are one of the most sensous part of the body and although we don’t have lips like that of Angelina Jolie, we could always make it look better than cursing winter season. Since our lips contain no sebaceous glands, they can’t moisturize themselves, and the small amount of saliva that reaches our lips via tongue-tip is often not sufficient to prevent our lips from becoming dehydrated. Here are some fabulously simple, delicious all-natural ways to keep your lips moist, soft, and lusciously kissable.

  • Starting the day, we all brush our teeth. While doing so, we can gently, I repeat GENTLY brush our lips as well. This will exfoliate and take away chapping, and will also plump up the lips temporarily.
  • You knew this one but never seemed to bother: Drink lots of water throughout the day.
  •    If you are looking for a home remedy, the best one would be applying a dab of honey on your lips.  This will act as a humectant, drawing moisture from the air to your skin, keeping your lips soft, plump, and kissably sweet
  •  White teeth: this might sound like some dentist advice but whitening your teeth is necessary for making your lips popping out.
  • Your lips don’t act as a chap healer so do carry a nice chapstick with you. Don’t be a miser and go for cheap ones as it will make your luscious lips dreadful.
  • Before going to bed, you may apply a good lip moisturizer on your lips. This helps in arresting moisture throughout the night, keeping your lips supple and soft.
  •  If you want to go herbal you may consider applying equal quantity of coconut and almond oil on your lips, before going to bed. Wash it off in the morning with lukewarm water.
  •  If you want pink lips, then you might apply fresh beet root juice on your lips regularly before going to bed. It is considered an effective remedy for dark lips.
  •   Avoid intake of caffeine and smoking. This can cause dehydration and skin darkening, thereby affecting the way your lips look.
  •  To make your lips kissable, go for a kiss! That circulates blood around your lips keeping it healthy.

Happy pouting folks!

Organic Café

I was first there a few years back right on the day it was inaugurated. Taking my cousin from America around Basantapur, we saw the “Organic” sign and you know how quick the people living in the western countries are on promoting organic food. So we sat on the stairs for a while and chomped on the delicious Carrot cake with homegrown coffee. It was all history only that I saw Bipin Dai, the owner of Organic more than too often at previously called, Razzle Dazzle.
Only last year, my friend suggested s to meet up there. I did not quite remember the name of the small restaurant but when he said, behind Sandwich Park, I knew exactly where he was talking about. It was where I ate the amazing Carrot cake!

It was around January then and I can tell this to you without a second thought that we hung out there talking about nothing for at least 5 days a week and have been a regular since then till date! The menu here is nothing extravagant! But the pleasant music coming from a music store coming from the next lane and peaceful typical Nepali environment will lure you to that place more than once. At first, just seeing the place flooded with what we call them, “Kuires” you might think that it is not a place for Nepalese. And that’s where you make your mistake! If the place is in one of the most historic places in Kathmandu, why would you be an outcast?

Anyhow, Naina Didi who is as bright as sunshine looks after the place and makes the best sandwich on earth. Whenever I am back home from Delhi, I make a point to eat that almost every day because that heavenly Goat cheese (Or yak cheese) sandwich with fresh lettuce, tomatoes and I don’t exactly remember what but yummy stuff is not something that you get everywhere! To team up with that, you can either drink fresh brewed coffee or something that you wouldn’t get to drink every day, Mint Tea. Not to forget the mouthwatering chocolate croissants and doughnuts in an affordable price.

Go there with your friends, with your parents or yourself, I can guarantee you with a good time! If you are a facebook-holic and want to stay home all day long and Like everybody’s status-es, you can do that at Organic as well! With Cyber Station’s superfast internet at Rs. 15 per hour, you can have the time of your life there seated in low Bamboo chairs with comfy mattresses on top!

Story of our lives =]

India.

Here I am in Dwarka Mor, New Delhi sitting on my bed in the room I have been hiring as a Paying Guest in an Indian Family’s house. It is a small room. Half the size of my own room back in Nepal (I had the smallest room in my own house) with another bed, for my roomie and a cupboard that I have to share with her.
The only pretty thing around the room is the pictures of family and friends I have pasted without my landlord’s consent in the dark Green colored walls. With my bed placed right next to the window- for which I paid extra- all I can see is cows and smell cow poop whenever I try to open the glasses for fresh air. Cows should be India’s national animal instead of Nepal’s!

However, ants and a small mouse that is anonymous but always leaves his remains all over the floor at night have been my longest company so far. My previous roommate was kicked out without a day’s notice because she ate too much. Yes, she ate 4 Chapatis for breakfast, 4 for lunch and 6 for dinner. That was quite a much for my landlady to afford. Also, all Indian people eat is Chapatis. They have rice occasionally which is depressing for a Nepali who is accustomed to having rice 2 meals a day. My landlady cooked Pumpkin the whole week. She bought one that weighed 4 Kilos and cooked it every day. One thing I learned, I should not have been brought up like a pampered princess who got to eat whatever she asked for. So the whole week, I survived on Maggie. Not only that week but I buy 20 packets of Maggie every month. I just pray to god I never get sick of it and my tummy doesn’t turn into Maggie as well!

We have a maid called, “Kailashi” who talks to herself and sings in an alien language while she sweeps the floor. She is partially deaf so she doesn’t hear when we ask her to clean well. To avoid the elongated conversation about the cleanliness and the continual news about her husband who left her for another woman, I prefer cleaning the room myself. I skip it on some days when I have a lot of assignments to do but I manage to clean it almost every day. College starts at 9 and we have to be in classes by 8: 55 or else we lose the attendance for that class. I don’t know how I am managing to get up and do things on my own without my mother shouting on top of her voice, pleading me to go to school till last year. Maybe, this is called “Growing Up”. I have missed many of my first classes though! (Guilty smile)
Hindi is another big obstacle that comes my way. Even though I grew up watching Hindi movies and Commercials, I can’t speak Hindi. At all. It takes me almost a minute and more to explain what I had for lunch, or to tell my Landlady that I will be late or anything! Worse, the subject I hate the most (Economics) is taught in Hindi. I literally doze off in that class.

Nepalan is a name that I got in College. A guy calls me China for no apparent reason. But, the college is very good than what I had expected. The friends are welcoming and very eager to know about Nepal and teaching me Hindi. However, some say that commuting with me in English will certainly be beneficial to them! And I love how some of my friends are taking an effort to take me around Delhi to make me familiarize with the whole surrounding.

(Bangla Sahib, the biggest Gurudwara in Delhi)

After a week of the same routine with more than 100 texts per day with friends, I wait for Sunday like anything. Then I hate it as soon as I open my eyes on a Sunday morning. I remember how many clothes I have to wash, how many assignments I have to do and another list of work. Once the Jeans and Towel are washed, the battle is almost over. It might make you laugh but I seriously can’t hold the towel when I wash it. How can the fluffy towel be so heavy when dipped in water? I missed the maid that came over to my house in Nepal then. She washed everything that was in the laundry bag and it was so easy for me just to flip clothes into it. Here, I don’t even have a laundry bag. I collect dirty clothes in a big Polythene bag.

Meeting Nepali friends here is just soo good! I love even just talking to them on the phone. Atleast I just get to talk to Nepali. My friends here teach me how to swear in Hindi all the time! And I swear at someone in Nepali when I dont like them at all! But of course, all for fun!

How could I miss the pleasures I get when I eat meat? From Mc. Donalds to KFC and Dominos, I love them all! They are not as good as portrayed on television but to a person who diesnt get to eat meat ever, its just heaven. :)

I sleep everynight with the fear that the fan on the ceiling might topple over my anytime and kill me.
And, I know this is abrupt but its 2 at night and I have to sleep!
Sunday tomorrow!
More next time!
<3
xoxo.

I have so many dresses! (Yaaay!)

Dear Diary,
Since I never wrote journals as a young girl, I have to tell you something today!
I have 28 dresses! TWENTY EIGHT!
More details as I continue to write!

I was a tomboy till my early teens. I ran around killing insects, beating up my cousins, watching wrestling and practicing it on my daddy. I hated pink and red and yellow. I went for black, dark blue and black.
Having been brought up as the younger one in the family, there was no other option for me than to wear what my sister did. As she grew older, I got her clothes. They were not always in a bad condition and horrible looking but they were pink and frilly and cute- making me look like a girl! Of course my mother wouldn’t want me to look bad  and like a boy so I didn’t have a say in what I wore till I was 15. The only time I bought clothes was during Dashain. And even then, my mother chose things for me. Which were again, “Girly Clothes!”

However, the year I was “Sweet Sixteen” my sense of styling changed completely! I was no more into The Rock or Undertaker and I stopped throwing temper tantrums when I had to wear dresses.  I was ashamed to say it but I started liking Hannah Montana and the Olsen Twins and the way they did their hair and make- up, the kind of clothes they wore and their attitude.  With time, I grew taller than my elder sister and I no more had to use her old clothes and I often denied using them! Yes, that was the time when I thought I knew everything on earth! But I wouldn’t call this my changing phase as school took most of the time from my life then leaving me with a Saturday which was a family day,  and I didn’t get to experiment much.  But I did spend all my pocket money to buy fashion magazines such as Vogue and Marie Claire. I cut all the pretty clothes featured there and kept it safe in my journal book and promised myself to get if not all, some of them when I was older.
Once I was done with my tenth grade, and I started earning money (I started working pretty soon), I bought everything that I wanted to. My mother (you know her!)  would shout at me, try to strangle me- well not literally, shout at me again- but I never followed what she said! I bought clothes as soon as I saw them! And I had to visit almost every shop- usually in RB Complex!  I bought them, wore them, dumped them and bought new ones again! It often happened that I saw something in one of the magazines and I went down to hunt that dress in all of the shops in Kathmandu!

I was not born a shopaholic- in fact, I hated shopping. But once I joined a Lifestyle magazine as a writer and came across a zillion- ok not a zillion but at least 5 pretty dresses every day, I couldn’t keep my heart away from them! I went shopping the day I got my salary! Seeing the latest trends being followed in the magazine, it changed my styling sense. It changed for good! It was amazing how much I had not grown physically and almost all of my old clothes fit me. Even if they didn’t, I used some scissors, thread and needle and sewed them into something else!

Last week as I was getting dressed (you know, Sanvi’s birthday!), I was looking for a pair of my favorite jeans in my cupboard and on the verge of finding it; I figured out that I just had one pair of favorite jeans and a few others that I never wore. Then looking at the left side of my wardrobe, I saw dresses, so many that there was no more space to hang them onto the hangers! I counted their number and it came as a shock to me. I had 28 dresses. I wore the one that was brand new that day which I got in Pokhara. It was a nice cotton dress perfect for summer- frilly and cool. It was a love at first sight dress and I wouldn’t mind splurging on it. But when I asked for the price, I couldn’t believe my ears. Yes, she said they were for Three hundred and fifty bucks. I asked the saleswoman if the dress had any damage done or such and when she shook her head (just as I was wishing she would do); I bargained it down to 275 bucks! Now that got me thinking! I saw a similar dress by Chanel on FTV some time back. It looked very much the same!  If I planned to butt in my lips and not let out the truth, maybe no one would guess the price. And it made my heart sink because it was so much better than the beautiful dress from Zara that I bought for 10 times its price.

Again, getting back to love for my dresses, I don’t understand one thing. My boyfriend hates it when I wear them. We get into fights almost every time I wear them. It’s not because he doesn’t like me wearing dresses but because it seems like committing a crime to wear a dress in the streets of Kathmandu.  Even if they are knee length and decent looking, you get scary stares and unwanted head-turns not to forget the sleazy comments that come along. Obviously, we are responsible teenagers and we wouldn’t go around wearing un- appropriate clothes. But again, it all depends upon what we chose to wear where. Since I have almost, only dresses in my wardrobe, I carefully make selections of clothes when I make a plan to step out.
On the verge of writing this, I came across a nice dress in vogue.com! It’s a pretty pink picnic dress! Perfect for summer!

So, until next time when I write about having a million dresses (I hope I get to write about it someday!) I am off to hunt for my new dress that will look like the one in Vogue! If not that, something else is always there!
Yippe!
A brand new dress!

P.S. I hope my mother didn’t hear me ‘Yippie!’

5 jobs in 5 years and I’m 19!

The trend of working and taking a gap between their between the completion of High school and Graduate Level has been soaring up high! I wouldn’t call it a bad trend because I have been working ever since I was in the 8th grade. Yes, you might not believe me but read on more to know what jobs I did!

I am not bragging about myself but I was a very bright student in school. Not in terms of studies but extracurricular activities. And amazingly, my school Triyog Higher Secondary School was such that it gave equal priority to both giving me a perfect platform. I loved writing since I was a small girl. My first article got published in The Kathmandu Post when I was in the 4th grade. When I reached the 6th grade, the frequency grew. There were at least three articles that got published every month till I was in the 8th grade.

There is a team called Today’s Youth Asia. It is being run by Nepali nationals and it trains school going students on Personality Development and Media. They took 3 students from almost all the schools in Kathmandu and gave them trainings every Saturday at their auditorium. Luck gave me a hand and I was one of the three to get chosen from Triyog for a year’s training. It was an amazing experience. Again, not bragging too much, I was chosen to be the trainer for the upcoming batch the year I was done with my training. They told me I was the best in class. Now that made me proud and happy. So since then I started working. I started earning. It was not much of an amount but it made my parents proud and they got to talk about their daughter amidst friends.

After working there for two years, I joined St. Mary’s High School for my +2.  Since school got over at 12 and I had nothing to do the whole day, instead of stalking people on Facebook, I applied for VOW as an Editorial Intern and I got in. I worked there for 8 months. It was hectic to do doing school homework and articles on serious issues at the same time. I went back home at 12: 30, reached VOW office by 1 and worked till 5: 30, got home at 6.  I was a non paid intern there but the experience was worth every bad report card I came across at school. And I did mention earlier that I was not a good student, I was an average and am happy to have been that way. I left VOW when the boards for 11th appeared and my parents forced me to leave the job.

I couldn’t stay stable for more than a week after finishing my 11th boards again. I looked up for jobs online and came across an Event Managing company called, Shine Events. This was a different job for me! It was during the same working hours like VOW.  I didn’t know much about the Marketing field but my boss was kind enough to correct me every time I went wrong.  One of the best events we did was a Fashion Show. It was amazing and again, even though the salary wasn’t that good, I put it off by saying it was experience that mattered. And trust me it did. I was still young and my parents were supportive enough.

Like always, exams always got on the way. I had to leave that job because of the 12th Board exams. After exams, I randomly applied to ECS. There was a very funny thing I did when I ran across the office in Kupondole when I was young. I always pointed towards it and said, “That’s my office”.  It was weird but it did come true.  I was the Editorial Assistant and Feature Writer for Living Magazine. It was the toughest job I had done till date. Since I was free and school got over, I worked from 9 AM to 5 PM. The working hours were never fixed. I went for work at 7 sometimes and stayed up till 10 at times. It was astonishing how co-operative my parents were. The environment, work and payment here was like that of a professional one and I could no more act like the teenager I usually was. My friends teased me about having an office button on my face. Every time I got a phone call from work, my mood switched and my voice changed and I was professional. What they didn’t realize was, even though I was their friend, I was a colleague to 30 year olds at work. After working here for over a year, I had to continue with my studies. I didn’t want to leave, it had grown to become like a home to me with attachment with my boss who was more than a sister to me and my colleagues.  But I had to quit. I cried a river on my last day when my colleagues surprised me with a cake with “Ms. Awesome” written on it. I love ECS and always will.

However, call it a miracle or I don’t know what. I had applied for a TV Program as the main anchor and two days after I left ECS, I got a phone call from them for an interview and I got in! It was something that made me a celebrity! I was happy and I jumped up and down all the time until the time we actually started shooting. It was a 3 week tour all over Nepal. The show is called Maya & Max where I am Maya. It is a travelogue with children and a program meant for kids. It was not an easy job we got up at 3 almost every day and shot till 5 in the evening. My favorite phrase was “Pack- Up”. On the verge of travelling, I got sun burnt; got bruises from falling from a bicycle but going around Nepal, meeting children, new people was just more than amazing! There was this day when I was lousy and had to do 24 takes. That is quite a much! But since I was the “Heroin” the crew members treated me like one! There was a runner boy running after me all the time, ready with an umbrella, water, makeup and my phone. The biggest lesson learnt was, never under estimate a movie!

Workspace! :)

Having worked so much by the time I am 19, I suggest everyone should work! Be it a small job or a big one! Don’t work for money, but for experience. It doesn’t give you a safe job in the future but it does give you the skill to choose between 5 different safe jobs!

Angry Birds= Angry you.

I woke up this morning to the sounds of the annoying crow going “caw- caw- caw” and I swear to god I wanted to throw my alarm clock at him making his head pop!

Hello world, I am an Angry Birds addict. You want to know what that is? Well, it’s a puzzle video game where there are wingless birds and green pigs. The green pigs are apparently the villains who have stolen the birds’ eggs and they are not only angry but VERY angry and ready to wage battle. With the help of a slingshot the birds are tossed against the pigs’ home aiming at the Green Pigs and try to tear it down.  There are different types of birds, each with different specialties which the player has to use carefully and get the timing, physics and flight patterns right.

I started playing it when my friend had an iPhone and guilty as I am telling you this, I called for a date everyday and ended up playing Angry Birds while he happily chomped down the Momos we ordered.  I even tried to trade his mobile with my lame 0th Century Nokia set but all in vain. So, I started getting addicted to the game, I just couldn’t stop playing! He was an addict too until he cleared all the levels so he understood. Thank god! And the worst part was, since I didn’t have the access to the game all the time, every time I met someone with an iPhone or an iTouch, I literally snatched it from their hands and started playing the game.

I might sound like an idiot but seriously, when we can’t cross the level, the mean Green Pigs made an annoying sound which is like, “Khroowwww Ah ha”. I don’t know what that means in the game but it makes me so mad that keep myself preoccupied until the level is finished and I win the battle. But again, every stage is so addictive that you can’t actually get off the hook. My mother hates the sound of the game and asks me to have it on mute. But I absolutely love it and I think it gets me “In the moment” while killing the pigs.

Maybe people who invented “Angry Birds” heard prayers of those people who don’t have an apple product and started the game on the search engine, Google Chrome as an application. As soon as I heard that, I ran home and installed it in my laptop. I have been playing day and night since then. The frustrating yet tempting game has had a grip in my life. Even my Daddy asked me to install the game in his laptop so you can just imagine how awesome it can be! So far, out of the 135 levels, I crossed 96 and I am hoping to get over the whole thing in the few following days!

Wish me luck folks!

Until then, why don’t you try playing Angry Birds?

30- Day Facebook Photo Challenge!

I am a facebook- holic and since I am not involved in many things at the moment, I spend all of my day Facebooking! I know it’s not healthy but come on, we all know how fun it is to stalk people and find out everything about them from facebook! Like me, many other people are facebook-holics and they post/ update statuses telling the whole world what they had for breakfast, where they are, what they are doing, what they are planning to do and many other things!

So, just like any other day, I got up and opened up my laptop and connected the modem and laid back on my bed (I do this literally, everyday!) Google chrome wasn’t working so I used another browser and typed Facebook on it. The page lead to the search results from Google and there I saw, “30 Day Facebook Challenge”. With the lazy bum lying on my bed, I was up for any challenge that seemed right at that moment. And I did! I went through all the criteria and started with the challenge!

It was basically posting a new picture every day. Not as per as our wish but what the challenge asked up to do! It all started with Day-1 where you had to post a picture of yourself with fifteen facts then Day- 2 when you post a picture of you and the person you have been closest with the longest. Likewise, this was an easy way of knowing a person inside out! You know, what they do, what they like and stuff! Today is my 13th Day! I am supposed to post a picture of my favorite artist/ band! Now I am confused because I want to include all the bands I know because I have loved them at certain time at least once!

This 30 day facebook challenge is a fun thing to do if you’re lazy and you have nothing better to do! But trust me, after a few days you get bored and tired. Like me! I am too lazy to post anything today or was yesterday or 3 days before! The excitement was there only for a few days! All of my friends found it interesting and told me that they follow it every day and wait for my photo of the day! Again, it was a difficult thing to do. Looking for pictures, writing captions and posting it every day!
I started this challenge with a best friend of mine and we were discussing about how bred we are already! Are we lazy and relentless? Or is the challenge tiring? Well why don’t you try it and tell me about it? Here are the rules and things to do and a few screen snapshots from my facebook challenge!
All the best!
A best of luck for myself too!
I hope I get across the battlefield!
